CHALLENGE

Our client had lived in this well-loved family home for over 20 years when they appointed us to create an extension to their existing kitchen, to provide a new garden room, utility room and patio which flowed directly from the kitchen. The clients were looking for extra space to sit and appreciate their beautiful garden, especially since they were coming into requirement. The property is situated within Sandown Park area of Tunbridge Wells, and the client wanted the new extension to be contemporary in style to contrast to the existing house, which is a more conventional brick building, echoing those around it.

RESPONSE

The client’s budget was capped, and our design had to be carefully considered, to remain affordable but still give the ‘wow factor’. Natural light and 360-degree views were vital to the design, as the garden is ‘wraparound’ to the house and is south-facing. We designed sliding doors on three elevations of the extension, and as overheating within the space would otherwise be an issue, we designed an angled canopy to limit direct sunlight during the warmest parts of the days.

It was important that the extension felt connected to the garden, and so we designed a new wraparound patio to be flush with the internal floor level. The new extension was designed to connect seamlessly to the kitchen to create an ‘open-plan’ feel, and located perfectly to ensure uninterrupted views to the garden, the moment from stepping into the kitchen.

The extension was tastefully clad in natural timber cladding, adding contemporary contrast to the red brick of the main house.
