The client loved a French classic aesthetic, so we leaned into it for this room: pale pink and green throughout, with the sage of the window frames carried through to the wardrobes in the dressing area.
Complementary colours are something we always consider carefully, and pink and green work unusually well together.
Then there’s the bath. It sits in front of the window rather than in the ensuite, looking out over the garden, a rare thing in a master bedroom and the first thing everyone asks about.
Making it work took some working out. The back wall was relocated about 15 centimetres, which seems a lot of effort for the gain, but it earns its place: enough circulation around the bed and the bath to reach the ensuite without the room feeling cramped.

Downstairs loos carry less risk than any other room in a house, which is exactly what makes them so enjoyable to design.
There’s scope to play with texture and colour that would overwhelm a living room, and a client who might hesitate elsewhere will often say yes in here.
At Warren House, the starting point was the basin. It set the tone for the space and we built the room around it, with a tropical theme running through the tiling and the timber that feels nothing like the panelled rooms it sits beside.
Most of this house takes its cues from tradition. This one door leads somewhere else entirely.

At the end of a project there’s one question we always like to ask: which room is your favourite?
At Warren House, the owners couldn’t pick one.
“We probably don’t have a favourite, because we love each and every room. They’re all so different. We love the contrast as you walk between the traditional hall with the wood panelling, the study with even more panelling, and then the super modern space with the bright light coming in.”
That contrast was deliberate. The brief asked us to bring the outside in without losing the character of the house, so each room holds its own register while the whole still reads as one home. When a client can’t choose a favourite, we take that as the house doing its job.

This corner of Warren House was originally a garden room, open to the main space and not doing much for anyone.
Rooms like this are common in period houses: too connected to close off, too awkward to furnish, so they end up holding whatever has nowhere else to go.
We separated it with a set of doors and gave it a proper job as a study for two, with desks looking over the garden. The glazing actually increased, and the structure beneath it is sounder than it was before.
The bookcase was built around the owner’s books and the family pieces they wanted on display, which we think is the right way round. A room earns its keep when it’s shaped by what will actually live in it.
