Some of the best moves on a project are the ones that change how a whole house feels.
At The Hanging Bank in Ide Hill, a traditional rural home sat on a sloping site with one problem holding it back.
The roof structure was constraining light and spatial quality at first floor level, and the southern views were never fully used.
Our response centred on a vaulted first floor and a fully glazed southern gable.
The change draws light deep into the building and frames long views across the landscape. The volume of the house shifts entirely.
The material palette holds the rural character through it all, combining render, slate and ragstone with areas of composite cladding.

Heritage detail combined with contemporary finishes, neither one apologising for the other.
High ceilings. Original mouldings. A restored Georgian staircase.
Then a contemporary kitchen, contemporary bathrooms, contemporary lighting sitting alongside it.
The Royal Oak in Sevenoaks gave us the bones to do interiors properly. Grade II listed, late Georgian, dormant for years.
The restoration brought back what had been lost the grand entrance hall, the staircase, the mouldings carried through every floor.
The new layers were chosen to sit next to those features without competing with them.
What makes the style work isn’t the contrast.
It’s that the contrast is considered.
Every contemporary choice answers to an original one, and every original feature is given room to be itself.

The study at Warren House started as a dated, cluttered room with an odd little sunroom open to one side that was never quite working…
We redesigned it into something that feels like it has always belonged to the house 🏡
The reference was a classic, almost National Trust feel.
Traditional panelling, traditional lighting, a deep and considered palette.
Rather than clear the room and start over, we designed around the owner’s own pieces, the chairs, the desk, a model ship that mattered to them, so the room holds their history rather than replacing it.
The detail we love most is the panelling itself.
Look closely and the doors are there, blended seamlessly into the walls through the panel lines and the paint, so you almost wouldn’t know they exist.

Welcome back to Warren House, a full renovation and extension of a traditional home in a rural village in East Sussex.
Step through the front door and you’re in a grand hallway that holds onto the building’s character.
A neutral scheme runs the whole way through, from the flooring to the banisters to the paint and even the doors into the other rooms, so nothing interrupts the calm.
A chandelier sits over the staircase as the obvious centrepiece✨
Then there are the quieter touches. There’s a light fitting in this hallway that most people walk straight past, a small, characterful detail that somehow ties the whole space together. The house is full of these. Over the next few posts we’ll show you around 🏡
