Byng Road
Brief
Coleman Anderson was commissioned to modernise a property originally built in the early 20th century. When the clients approached us, they did not have a definitive vision for the property, allowing us the opportunity to present a variety of design options. These options were then synthesised into the final design, which was completed in 2023. Initial consultations with the clients provided valuable insights into the family’s lifestyle, guiding the design process to transform the property from its early 1900s origins into a contemporary and functional home.
Response
The owners, a family of 3, wanted to create a ‘forever home’ to be proud of. Following initial meetings with the client we were conscious of developing spaces that align with the family’s needs. A key design feature of this project was utilising the existing porch, which due to the home’s orientation, existed as a dark, dingy, dust-trap; a dumping ground for bicycles and other toys for previous owners.
It was proposed incorporating this space into the interior of the home by installing glazing between the existing pillar supports. This feature exemplifies the approach taken in modernising this property, it would prove to be a cost-effective solution to help pull light into the living area, increase the internal floor space, and vastly improve the street scene of the property. The project followed similar principles in its entirety, emphasis was placed on purposeful spaces, created using cost effective solutions; rather than creating space for the sake of space. As a result, the end product has the feel of a well-established home that works in harmony with the family that occupy it.
We approached Coleman Anderson to help with the design & build of a two storey back & side extension. They helped us through the process; design, consultation, advising us on building contractor selection, contracts, planning and materials. We felt in very capable hands and are absolutely delighted with the end result. We love our dream house! A huge thanks to Oliver in particular for being a calm, constant & talented presence through our building journey.
