Warren House
Brief
This project involved the renovation and extension of a traditional rural dwelling in East Sussex, with the aim of adapting the home for contemporary family living. The existing property was arranged as a collection of separate rooms, limiting natural light, visual connection, and overall flexibility, while its relationship with the surrounding garden was weak and underutilised.
The brief was to introduce a contemporary extension alongside a comprehensive internal reconfiguration, creating a more fluid and intuitive arrangement of spaces. A key ambition was to strengthen the connection between the house and its landscape, while maintaining a respectful dialogue with the building’s original character and rural setting.
Response
The proposal introduces a low, contemporary rear extension, expressed through clean lines, generous glazing, and timber cladding, creating a deliberate contrast with the existing structure. This new volume accommodates an open-plan kitchen, dining, and seating space, with sliding doors opening directly onto the garden and drawing natural light into the heart of the home. Internally, the plan is restructured to improve flow, with the kitchen acting as a central organising element supported by integrated ancillary spaces.
At first floor level, subtle reconfiguration enhances the quality and hierarchy of the accommodation, including the introduction of a refined master suite with dressing room and en-suite. A restrained material palette unifies the building, while elements such as an oak-framed porch and garage reinforce its rural character, resulting in a balanced and cohesive home.
