CHALLENGE

The brick-built barn, located within the Wealden countryside, started life as a cold store for cooking apples harvested at the neighbouring farm. Our clients appointed us to explore the development potential of the barn and whether it could be converted into residential using Permitted Development Class Q.

RESPONSE

When converting existing barns, one of the most challenging aspects is breaking up the spaces so they flow well and do not feel artificial or forced. The structure of the existing barn had to be retained, but we were able to construct a second floor within the frame, which housed 5 double bedrooms. The ground floor was divided up into generous living spaces, and due to the size of the barn, we were able to provide luxuries such as, a gym and a cinema room.

We are involved with several development projects that utilise Permitted Development Class Q, and provided conditions are met, agricultural barns can be converted into residential dwellings. If you have a barn that you think may be suitable, please contact us.

REACTION

“Coleman Anderson Architects, provided a top-notch service throughout our home development. They navigated us through every step of our large extension project, from initial concepts, to obtaining planning permission, and collaboration with builders which made the process painless. The transformation of our property into a stunning haven exceeded all our expectations. Without question, a 5 out of 5-star service and we would wholeheartedly recommend their services. Mr & Mrs Bresnahan

We don’t usually show the original house, but we thought this transformation was too impressive not to!
