Spring Cottage
Brief
A dated and tired home that had stood the test of time was in need of a new lease of life, and fresh ideas to prepare it for its next chapter. Spring Cottage was a property that had undergone a number of extensions and transformations over previously, but due to this disjointed approach it was no longer fit for purpose. The owners wanted to create a home that not only provided a visual connection with the stunning views to the rear of the property, but also would provide a physical connection that would allow the garden to become an extension of the house in summertime. This would then enable them to plan for the re-design of the garden as a future phase of the project, including pool and pool house. It was assumed that the way to achieve this was to add an extension to the rear of the property.
Response
Our final design reconfigured the existing floorspace into a new open plan kitchen, living and dining area, that maximized the stunning views to the rear of the house and utilised the south facing aspect of the dwelling to draw in as much natural light as possible into every pocket of the floorplan. Our thoughtful approach at Spring Cottage creates not only functional spaces, but spaces that positively impact the day-to-day lifestyle of the homeowners. Our approach in the design stage of this project did look at the possibility of extensions to the ground floor but it became apparent very quickly that we were able to meet the requirements of the clients by re-imagining the existing spaces and altering the internal layouts to create a plan that flowed across the split level and was co-ordinated in one holistic approach of architectural and interior design. As well as taking care of the architectural works, Coleman Anderson Interiors were appointed to assist the client in design choices and provide ideas that were characterized by simplicity, minimalism and functionality embodying the client’s Scandinavian heritage. The final interior specification became a blend of a more traditional ‘country cottage’ aesthetic and the minimalist neutrals of Scandi design.
I would highly recommend Coleman Anderson. I think I had no idea who to go to initially. When they first came over, they really listened to what we wanted and they presented about three or four different designs. They were also really good at paring us back, because a couple of the designs we could have gone really over the top but we were going to gain very little for the money we were going to spend. And when they listened to what we wanted, which was open space, and light, this was the perfect design.
