Royal Chase
Brief
We were appointed to rejuvenate a tired 1960s three-bedroom detached house into a spacious and functional home for a growing family. The brief stipulated the addition of two extra bedrooms, including a master suite with a dressing area, reading nook, and ensuite bathroom. Additionally, the family required a generous open-plan area for entertaining and ample storage solutions.
Response
To meet the brief, we designed extensive side and rear extensions to optimize the property’s floor plan. The roof was entirely reconstructed to accommodate the additional bedrooms. The internal layout was reconfigured to integrate these extensions while preserving the core structure of the house, including the original staircase, to manage costs effectively. The property’s large garden, extending to dense woodland, was enhanced by the rear extension and open-plan kitchen, which improved the connection between indoor and outdoor spaces, creating an exceptional area for entertaining.
Given the property’s location within the Tunbridge Wells Conservation Area, the front façade was designed to be in harmony with the surrounding context. We employed a traditional palette of brickwork, tile hanging, and lead-faced dormer windows to complement the architectural vernacular of the area. Conversely, the rear elevation embraced a more contemporary aesthetic, featuring timber cladding that resonates with the adjacent woodland, creating a cohesive transition between the modern extension and its natural surroundings.
