The Oak House
Brief
Our client acquired the White House, a typical 1970s property that, while spacious and solidly built, had an outdated interior needed significant refurbishment. Although the house was ample for their family, its layout was inefficient, and the internal spaces were dark and outdated.
Response
To address the brief, which required an open-plan layout, a utility room, additional storage, and a generous master bedroom, our initial approach was to evaluate the existing internal space before considering extensions. The property featured an integral garage and a large photography studio, both of which were repurposed into liveable areas. This enabled us to design an expansive open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area that overlooks the garden and integrates seamlessly with the central core of the house, which was reconfigured to include a newly designed staircase.
We enhanced the property’s thermal performance by upgrading the windows and installing internal insulation on the external walls. Additionally, solar panels with a battery storage system were installed on the roof to harness and store surplus solar energy, further improving the home’s sustainability and efficiency.
