Brief

Our client approached us with a unique opportunity: their expansive garden, which wrapped around their existing home, offered the potential for a new build on the side plot between their property and the neighboring one. They were interested in exploring the possibility of gaining permission for a contemporary home that would serve as an ideal space for them to downsize and retire.

The clients sought a complete contrast in style and lifestyle from their current home. Their vision was for a modern, flexible dwelling that would accommodate their needs as they aged but offer a house for the family to gather and entertain. Our task was to design a contemporary, future-proof home that would seamlessly blend aesthetics with functionality, offering a fresh start while ensuring long-term comfort and adaptability.

Response

Our proposal embraces modernity while prioritizing flexibility, functionality, and long-term comfort. The new dwelling will be a striking departure from the traditional style of the current home, offering a fresh and invigorating space that remains timeless as the clients transition into the next chapter of their lives. Given the expansive garden and the unique plot location, our design carefully considered the relationship between the new build and the surrounding environment. The house has been oriented to capture natural light and create a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor spaces, enhancing the sense of openness and connection to nature. Strategic landscaping will ensure privacy while also creating inviting outdoor areas for relaxation and entertainment.

The exterior design features clean lines, a minimalist approach, and a combination of high-quality materials that speak to modern architectural trends. Large, well-placed windows will not only bring in abundant natural light but also frame views of the garden, creating a strong visual link between the interior and exterior spaces. Understanding the importance of adaptability, the interior layout was designed with flexibility in mind. The design includes open-plan areas that are ideal for family gatherings and entertaining, while also incorporating private, cozy spaces for more intimate moments.

We will integrate smart home technologies to enhance convenience and energy efficiency, ensuring the home is both cutting-edge and sustainable. Features such as underfloor heating, energy-efficient glazing, and automated systems for lighting and climate control will contribute to a comfortable living environment that adapts to the clients’ changing needs over time.
