CHALLENGE

We were appointed by Portfolio Homes to look at the development potential of a single-house site in Sevenoaks. The site was originally host to a large detached property with a substantial garden accessed from a private road. Our client wanted to demolish the existing dwelling and replace it with two high-end, five-bedroom, contemporary family homes.

RESPONSE

The site presented significant constraints, namely a 10-meter level change from the front to the back and several protected trees and species present within proximity of the existing house.

To alleviate the level change, the houses were dug into the slope and at the rear, creating courtyard gardens that lead up to the main lawn area. The levels allowed for the master bedroom on the first floor to access the gardens directly.

The local vernacular is predominately traditional brick-built houses therefore, our architectural response had to be sympathetic and reference traditional forms, such as gable ends and horizontal openings.
