CHALLENGE

Deep within the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and surrounded by protected oak trees, this large extension and refurbishment scheme presented considerable planning issues. We were appointed to design a two-storey extension to add significant bulk to the previously converted stable block.

RESPONSE

The existing property had some obvious flaws. It lacked flow, the existing rooms were small, and none of the spaces were linked to the garden.

We designed a large two-storey extension within the existing courtyard in an agricultural warehouse style. The space we created allowed us to address the confused layout by forming a spacious open-plan living area with an oak-lined window seat which takes advantage of the view into the courtyard garden. On the first floor, we designed a luxurious master bedroom with ensuite and dressing room.

We specified a handmade brick laid in a flemish bond and used a lime mortar, along with hand-cut stone cills to create a beautiful contrast with the black crittal style windows.
