Woodside Road
Brief
We were commissioned by Portfolio Homes to assess the development potential of a single-house site in Sevenoaks. The site, formerly occupied by a large, detached residence with an extensive garden accessed via a private road, was to be redeveloped. Our client sought to replace the existing dwelling with two high-end, five-bedroom contemporary family homes.
Response
The site presented notable constraints, including a 10-meter change in elevation from front to back and the presence of several protected trees and species near the existing property.
To address the topographical challenges, the new homes were designed to be integrated into the slope, with the rear sections forming courtyard gardens that seamlessly connect to the main lawn area. This grading solution allowed for direct garden access from the master bedroom on the first floor.
Given the predominance of traditional brick-built houses in the area, our design approach was to respect and reference the local vernacular while incorporating contemporary elements. We employed traditional forms such as gable ends and horizontal openings to ensure that the new homes harmonize with the existing architectural context while introducing modern design features.
