Ruggles Farm

Ruggles Farm

Brief

Ruggles Farm is a converted farm and stables situated within the East Sussex countryside. The planning constraints included the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and protected ancient woodland which posed significant planning challenges. We were tasked with designing a two-storey extension to substantially increase the size of a previously converted stable block.

Response

The existing property exhibited several clear shortcomings: it lacked spatial flow, the rooms were small and compartmentalized, and there was no connection between the interior spaces and the garden, which is so often the case in conversions of historic buildings. Our design introduced a substantial two-storey extension within the existing courtyard, adopting an agricultural warehouse aesthetic. This was achieved using handmade brick laid in Flemish bond with lime mortar, which provided a striking contrast to the sleek, black Crittall-style windows.

The newly created space allowed us to resolve the disjointed layout, forming a spacious open-plan living area featuring an oak-lined window seat that overlooks the courtyard garden. The first floor was reimagined to include a luxurious master suite, complete with an ensuite bathroom and a dressing room, offering both functionality and elegance.
