CATEGORY – Extension
LOCATION – Tonbridge, Kent
BUDGET - £95,000
Coleman Anderson were appointed to create a single storey side and rear extension that would form the ‘heart of the home for a growing family’. The contemporary extension formed part of a dual brief which included a gable end loft conversion with rear dormer window, which achieved planning permission and will be completed at a later date.
The initial brief developed by the client focussed on a wish for open plan living space, natural light and a link to the rear garden. The existing kitchen was small and had no connection with the rest of the house, or the garden. By extending to the rear and opening up back of the house Coleman Anderson Architects were able to create a large open plan kitchen and dining space bathed in natural light from large bi folding doors and centrally positioned roof light, that creates a subtle break between the kitchen and dining space. Clever positioning of an internal glazed panel enables the family to stay in constant watch of the growing family.
The external finish of the extension was designed to be simple and constructed from a minimalist material pallet, emphasising the openings and creating a contrast between the front and the rear with vertical timber cladding.
